Installed in 2017 in downtown Los Angeles, the Freedom Sculpture is a crowd-funded public monument that celebrates diversity, equality, and freedom. The monument features a unique design of concentric cylinders that appear to have moving parts when they reflect light. It was designed by architect, artist, and engineer Cecil Balmond of Balmond Studio. Mr. Balmond’s design for the Freedom Sculpture was chosen from more than 300 artists’ entries.

Known for work that seamlessly blends art and science, Cecil Balmond has received many prominent honors, including the Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medal in Architecture and Officer of the Order of the British Empire for Services to Architecture. He has also taught as an endowed chair at the University of Pennsylvania design school.
